Puri is a fascinating temple-town situated on the eastern coast of India. Just an-hour-and-a-half drive from Orissa’s capital Bhubaneshwar, this little town has attracted many followers.
My first visit to Orissa was as a young school girl, when my mother decided to take my visiting grandparents there. My grandfather was extremely fond of travelling and despite his limited resources, always believed that seeing new places broadened your mind and perspective.
So we took an overnight train (second class sleeper) from Visakhapatnam to Bhubaneshwar and spent a couple of days there, after which we hired a car to Puri. It takes just an-hour-and-a-half to reach, but you will pass Pipli – a small town that is also a National Arts Centre where you will find beautiful applique handicrafts. It is a town of artisans and almost every family here is engaged in this craft. We stopped by and purchased a few colourful décor items, but not without some bargaining on the price.
Upon reaching Puri, we checked into a newly-constructed hotel by the sea. The view from our room was truly breathtaking. Today, there are many more good quality hotels in this town that cater to different budgets.
