Speak of sandalwood and the first thoughts that come to mind are fragrance, healing and India. Perhaps not in this order, but as you enter the Sandalwood Room, a new retail lifestyle concept store in Singapore, you will smell the fragrance of India.
The elegantly done up store is located in a beautifully restored historic shophouse at Princep Street a stone’s throw away from the busy Orchard Road that bustles with big brands. Here you will find home décor items, fine crafts, cultural novelties and curios, designer clothes and jewellery displayed in a creative manner. You will see the traditional South Indian swing converted to a counter top for curios or stoles hanging from a foldable wooden partition.
I met entrepreneur Jayashrree Mani over a cup of filter kapi, who has set up the place in creative collaboration with Mathangi Sinivasamurti, a Madras-based retail consultant. “I’d describe the Sandalwood Room as a place for retail recreation, where you can come, hang around and literally forget the world.”
