British horticulturist, artist and writer Gertrude Jekyll has quietly aptly said, “There is no spot of ground, however arid, bare or ugly that cannot be tamed into such a state as may give an impression of beauty and delight.”
But with a changing landscape and scarcity of land especially in places like Singapore, a small balcony, porch or patio is the only place to enjoy the outdoors. While a small place is easier to decorate bringing out all your creative juices, a large garden gives you the luxury of growing your own vegetables and fruits.
There are several ways to make your outdoors inviting, but first you must define the purpose of your space - are you going to keep it private and cosy, use it to entertain guests or allow your children to play there. Once you have decided on the usage, you can let your imagination fly.
As in any home décor project, it is important to choose and arrange furnishings according to the space available. Make sure that the furniture is made of all-weather materials so that it can withstand heat, rain and cold conditions. Also choose upholstery fabrics that are easy to maintain and durable.
While doing up a patio or a balcony, ensure that there is little clutter and be careful to not block entrance and exit points. Also choose plants that complement your theme and your space.
