Yoga guru B K S Iyengar died at a private hospital in Pune today. He was 96.
The yoga exponent was admitted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital here for poor heart function and difficulty in breathing.
Iyengar was ill for three weeks prior to hospitalisation but refused to get himself admitted and was treated at home by his family physician. He was moved to hospital when his condition deteriorated further.
Iyengar yoga is a form of Hatha Yoga that laid emphasis on detail, precision and alignment in the performance of posture (asana) and breath control (pranayama). He has systematised over 200 classical yoga poses and 14 different types of Pranayama (with variations of many of them) ranging from the basic to advanced.
