Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan is paying an official visit to Pyongyang on June 7 and 8 ahead of the landmark summit between United States President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un in Singapore on June 12.
Dr Balakrishnan’s two-day visit is at the invitation of North Korea’s foreign affairs minister Ri Yong-ho, said Singapore’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
During his visit, Dr Balakrishnan will also call on the President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly of North Korea, Mr Kim Yong Nam.
Dr Balakrishnan also visited Washington on June 5, where he met US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and National Security Advisor John Bolton. Both US officials thanked Singapore for hosting the summit.
Singapore’s former foreign minister George Yeo also visited North Korea in 2008, where he met his then-counterpart Pak Ui-chun .
