As of March 2016, Saudi Arabia’s debt to the US has accumulated to a hefty $116.8 billion.
This is perhaps one of the biggest mysteries of global finance revealed by the Treasury Department, after keeping the shocking figure hidden for the past 40 years.
As part of the Treasury’s goals of providing more “comprehensive and transparent” data, they disclosed the exact figures of the massive debts Saudi Arabia owned the U.S. alone instead of lumping Saudi’s holdings together with that of other oil-exporting nations like Iraq and Venezuala.
While the figures are statistically disturbing, Saudi Arabia is only the 13th largest foreign holder of US debt – behind the over $1 trillion owned by China and Japan each.
