Social media has played an important part in Narendra Modi’s election campaign. And even after he was elected Prime Minister, he keeps in touch by updating his Twitter handle.
For the first time ever, the Information and Broadcasting has drawn up a list of ministers and their Twitter followers – giving an indication of each leader’s popularity.
Modi himself is miles ahead of all his ministers with 8.18 million followers (including both his personal and official handle). He is followed by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj (1.44m followers) and HRD minister Smriti Z Irani with 6,52,000 followers.
The I&B ministry's social media hub had conducted a workshop for ministries and departments earlier this year, giving officials tips on how to establish a presence on Twitter, Facebook, YouTube and engage with the public.
The workshop had also advised ministries on tweeting or posting information using appropriate language and engaging younger audiences in the "era of digital democracy".
