The recently concluded 88th Academy Awards was quite a roller coaster, amidst turbulent boycotts in protest, of racial equality in film. South Asian documentary makers shone at this Oscar season with both an India-British film-maker and another from Pakistan winning awards. Pakistani journalist and film-maker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s “A Girl in the River. The Price of Forgiveness”, about a survivor of an attempted honour killing in her country won the best documentary short award. Asif Kapadia, who made a tribute to the jazz singer Amy Winehouse, won the best documentary feature at the awards.

The highlight of the night, however, was undoubtedly the moment when Hollywood heart throb Leonardo DiCaprio finally took home the coveted Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in “The Revenant”, after being denied for so long. Bollywood actress, Priyanka Chopra was also seen strutting down the red carpet in a Zuhair Murad gown. She presented an award for Best Film Editing with Liev Schreiber.
