Singapore’s army chief Major-General (MG) Melvyn Ong Su Kiat will take over as chief of defence force from Lieutenant-General (LG) Perry Lim Cheng Yeow on March 23. Brigadier-General (BG) Goh Si Hou will be army chief from March 21. These changes are part of the continuing process of leadership renewal in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the Ministry of Defence (Mindef) announced in a news release on March 12.
LG Perry Lim, 46, served the SAF with distinction since his enlistment in 1990, becoming the chief of defence force on August 18, 2015. Under his leadership, the SAF deployed forces to Kuwait and Iraq to contribute to multinational efforts against the threat of terrorism.
The incoming chief of defence force, MG Melvyn Ong Su Kiat, 43, joined the SAF in 1994 and was awarded the SAF Overseas Scholarship. As army chief, he strengthened the army's operational readiness to address the threat of transnational terrorism.
The incoming army chief, BG Goh Si Hou, 40, joined the SAF in 1997 and was awarded the President's Scholarship as well as the SAF Overseas Scholarship.
