Indian politicians and social activists have had their fair share of secret and, often, illicit relationships. Most affairs between them are rarely talked about in the media. While everyone has a right to privacy, a politician, after all, holds public office and is beholden to the public. What happens when some of these politicians consort with or have mistresses who are citizens of an “enemy” country?

In this case, the chief minister of Punjab Captain Amarinder Singh, who is married to politician Preneet Kaur, is alleged to have as his mistress Aroosa Alam a Pakistani journalist with alleged links to the ISI. The divorcee (and mother of three adult children) is the daughter of the infamous General Rani, who was mistress of Pakistan’s General Yahya Khan. She is also mother of popular Pakistani actor and singer Fakhar-e-Alam. She is frequently seen by Singh’s side in Chandigarh and in his holiday homes and acts as his official hostess. Is India’s security compromised by such liaisons?
