Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong hopes to bring home some of the new ideas from China.
PM Lee, who is on an official visit to China, wrote in a Facebook post: “ China is leading the way in technological innovation and adoption of environmentally-friendly smart city projects. There is much to learn from China’s experience beyond e-payments, for example in customised urban transport solutions. In addition to electric bicycles, electric buses are fast becoming a common sight in major cities like Beijing and Shenzhen. Hope to apply some of these ideas to our #SmartNation push back home.”
He is now in Hainan for the Bo’ao Forum for Asia.
In Beijing, he held talks on April 9 with Chinese Vice-President Wang Qishan, who called Singapore an "old friend" of China.
"PM Lee and Vice-President Wang also noted the potential of bringing our cooperation to a new level through the Belt and Road Initiative," said Mr Lee's press secretary, Ms Chang Li Lin, in reference to Beijing's ambitious undertaking to expand trade and infrastructure links between Asia, Africa, Europe and beyond, reported Today.
Added Ms Chang: "PM Lee said that the world, including China, was undergoing a period of significant transition. Singapore would continue to support China's efforts to further open up.
"PM Lee expressed confidence that China would continue to open up and uphold the multilateral trading system, and contribute to the development and prosperity of the region and the world."
