Scientists at the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) have discovered a way to reduce tumors 40-per cent faster than chemotherapy, by using bubbles to deliver treatment directly into the cells.
Unlike chemotherapy drugs, which are mainly untargeted, and damage both healthy and unhealthy cells, microbubbles contain iron oxide nanoparticles and cancer-drug particles, which are injected deep into the tumor by ultrasound.
Researchers plan to conduct studies on lung and liver cancer using animal models, and predict that it will take another decade before this delivery method reaches human clinical trials.
