Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe is on his way to Singapore for a medical checkup, the presidential spokesman said on December 13.
This is Mugabe’s first foreign trip since the army forced him from office in November. Accompanied by his wife, Grace, he is expected to make a stopover in Malaysia, where his daughter, Bona, is expecting a second child.
Mugabe, 93, who ruled Zimbabwe for 37 years, resigned after the army and his ruling Zanu-PF party turned against him when it became clear that his wife, Grace, 52, was being groomed as his successor.
The trip means Mugabe will not be in Zimbabwe when Zanu-PF endorses President Emmerson Mnangagwa as its leader and presidential candidate for next year's elections during a one-day special congress on December 15.
Mugabe reportedly travelled out of the country on a state-owned Air Zimbabwe plane.
Under Zimbabwe’s laws, a former head of state is entitled to perks including limited foreign travel and medical insurance.
