The venue was impressive, the crowds boisterous and the welcome that Prime Minister Narendra Modi received from Indians living in the US was akin to a rock star.
In what was an epic show of political, social and economic clout, India had arrived. “You have given me a lot of love,” Modi said, as the audience surged to its feet. “This kind of love has never been given to any Indian leader, ever. I’m very grateful to you. And I will repay that loan by forming the India of your dreams.”
While the atmosphere at Madison Square Garden was similar to any US political convention, Modi’s speech did not have big ticket announcements.
Some announcements that PM Modi made during his speech, Modi said that democracy and a young population are the country’s main strengths. “People ask me about my 'bigger vision'… I tell them I reached here by selling tea, I am a simple man, so I focus on small things.”
However some of the key announcements were:
* Life time visas for persons of Indian origin (PIO) cardholders
* PIO and OCI cards to be merged to arrive at a common card
* Those who come to India for long stay will not have to report periodically at police stations as is the present requirement
* US nationals to get long term visas and visa on arrival following electronic travel authorization
However, no time frame was announced for the implementation of these reforms.
