Management Development Institute of Singapore – Oklahoma City University (MDIS-OCU) recently held a graduation ceremony for its Bachelor of Arts degree programme at the Raffles City Convention Centre.
The Guest-of-Honour was Associate Professor Fatima Lateef, and MP for the Marine Parade GRC. The spotlight, however, was on the 100 eager graduates, and in particular, two commendable students - Basil bin Iskandar Mirza, and Malini Pannirselvam.
Basil overcame the difficulty of a non-functional left hand incurred in a serious road accident, which left him in a coma for a week, while Malini suffered through tough financial issues, and had to take a loan from SINDA to tide her through the crisis.
Basil attributed his source of strength to “being a positive person”, and in regarding the scars he sustained in the accident as “unique.. battle scars”. Malini believed the significant lessons she learnt throughout her university life was to “carry herself with confidence” and “to reach out and grab opportunities”.
MDIS Secretary-General, Dr R Theyvendran, said, “People must start being creative”, especially with the changing landscape of education. He cited MDIS-OCU’s emphasis on “thinking out of the box” in supporting a more open and progressive education system.
