The Singapore Festival of Arts (SIFA) was launched earlier last week at the Arts House, returning for the final year under Founding Festival Director, Ong Keng Sen.
Managed independently by the Arts House Limited, SIFA was first launched in 2014 under the stewardship of Ong, who is known for his boundary-breaking line-up of Singaporean and international commissions at the festival each year. SIFA is on its fourth edition this year, where it will shine the spotlight on Singapore artists and ordinary Singaporeans who take the international platform with their ideas and their performances.
With the theme of Enchantment, SIFA 2017 features 16 commissions focusing on Singapore artists including two Singapore collaborations with international artists, master film-maker Lav Diaz from Philippines and the National Theatre of Korea. Seven international productions, all of which are Asia-Pacific premieres, will also be featured in SIFA this year. Together, they will generate over 90 unique events led by Singapore-based artists and residents of Singapore.
From an intimate encounter cooking alongside a stranger, to participating in the making of an actual film as guests of a Punjabi wedding banquet, SIFA 2017 offers members of the public a chance to experience enchantment in a range of settings. By drawing in art lovers as both audiences and participants, SIFA moves towards becoming an innovative and participatory festival this year.
Founding Festival Director Ong explains further, “It’s about ethical generosity and being opposed to cynicism in this age of global disenchantment. Because you are enchanted with life, you still desire to create a better world for all of us to live in. The works explore how to remain engaged despite growing populist sentiments, excessive control, and how to stay connected to issues as we are faced with injustices around us.”
Tickets go on sale from 20 April 2017 at all SISTIC outlets. Early bird tickets are available till 20 May 2017.
