Anoop Jain, the founder of Humanure Power, has won the 2014 Waislitz Global Citizen Award for his "exemplified values of a Global Citizen" through his work in founding Humanure Power (HP) in Bihar in 2011 that builds community sanitation facilities in rural India.
The award also carries a US$100,000 cash prize in recognition to the winner's work in making the "world a better place."
Jain, began work on health projects in 2010, and is the Co-founder and US Director of Humanure Power. He first raised $30,000, when he worked with Tibetan refugees helping them build a community soup kitchen. His focus shifted to sanitation after he traveled to Bihar, India's poorest state. Jain witnessed thousands of Indians defecating outside, and partnered with local community activists and dear friends, Chandan and Prabin, to start Humanure Power.
He has put together a dedicated team, which has helped the organisation raise over $120,000 since 2012 from the Dell Social Innovation Challenge, private donations, and a fellowship from Echoing Green. Jain is committed to making toilets a right, not just a privilege.
