Discus thrower Vikas Shive Gowda gave India its first gold medal in athletics at the 2014 Commonwealth Games held at the Hampden Park Stadium, Glasgow.
Last time, Gowda had won the silver medal, but this year, the 31-year-old upped his game with a best throw of 63.64 metres. Cypriot Apostolos Parellis won the silver medal with 63.32m while Jamaican Jason Morgan held on to the bronze with a best throw of 62.34m.
This win takes India to the fifth position on the medals chart with 13 gold, 20 silver and 14 bronze medal with a total tally of 47. England, Canada and Australia occupy the top three positions.
