India’s military is ranked fourth on a global index of 133 countries, trailing behind only the US, Russia and China in that order. India’s western neighbour Pakistan is 13th on the Global Firepower (GFP) list 2017.
China is poised to overtake Russia and take the second place soon, according to GlobalFirepower.com. China, with a defence budget second only to the US, has more aircraft and naval ships than Russia but is hugely outnumbered in total tanks in service. The US has far fewer tanks than Russia and China.
Also in the top 10 are France, fifth, Britain, sixth, Japan, seventh, Turkey, eighth, Germany, ninth, and Egypt, 10th. Italy is 11th and South Korea 12th.
The rankings for the index are reached after judging the countries on 50 parameters, including military resources, natural resources, industry and geographical features and available manpower.
According to GFP’s assessment, India has more military personnel (4.2 million) than China (3.71 million). But China has more active military personnel (2.26 million) than India (1.36 million). The US has fewer military personnel (2.36 million) than India, China and Russia (3.37 million) but more in active service (1.37 million) than India and Russia (798,500).
The index didn’t count nuclear stockpiles for the ranking but gave points for nuclear capability, whether recognised or suspected. Also taken into account was the defence budget with China allocating more than three times as much as India.
Compared with Pakistan, India was ahead on all counts except the number of attack helicopters and self-propelled artillery units.
