As electricity reached Manipur’s Leisang village on April 28, India completed the electrification of all its villages after more than 70 years of independence, reports Moneycontrol.
Leisang village, located in the Senapati district of Manipur with its 65-strong population (2011 census), now joins the other 597,463 census villages in the country which have access to electricity.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Independence Day speech in 2015 promised electrification of all villages within 1000 days.
The task was completed in 988 days on April 28. Its successful completion is being attributed to an effective implementation of the Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana scheme through the Rural Electrification Corporation by the Ministry of Power.
