The family found dead in Burari , north Delhi, on July 1 didn’t expect to die when they hanged themselves. A diary has been found which shows they expected to be saved by the spirit of the late patriarch of the family.
Lalit Chundawat, 45, the younger son, convinced the family they would be saved by the spirit of his father. The police said this after reviewing the 11 diaries he had dictated over the last 11 years. His words were mostly written down in the diaries by his niece, Priyanka Chundawat.
Both he and his niece, who was engaged to be married, died along with his mother, his elder brother, his and his brother’s wife and their children.
The last sentence in the final diary, written on the day of the suicides, reads: "...keep water in a cup, when it changes colour, I will appear and save you."
All 11 members of the family were found dead. According to the police, 10 of them were found bound and hanging in their home. The eleventh, 77-year-old matriarch Narayani Devi, was found in an adjacent room.
The lone survivor was the family’s dog. Their bodies were found by a neighbour who entered the building to buy milk from their shop.
The security footage recovered from a CCTV camera installed opposite the house, shows the family preparing for the hanging voluntarily. The CCTV footage shows Narayani Devi’s elder son Bhavaneh’s wife Savita and her daughter Neetu bringing five stools which the family members later used to hang themselves.
The diaries also contain a description of the family's final meal - 20 rotis delivered to their home on the night of June 30. They were found dead the next day.
