A day before the start of the United Nations climate talks in Paris, Bill Gates announced the formation of the Breakthrough Energy Coalition, a group of more than 20 billionaires who have agreed to invest in innovative clean energy.
Gates and world leaders will also be announcing an initiative Bill Gates has invested in clean energy in the past, but this is his most public statement to date. He is joined by billionaires like former hedge fund manager Tom Steyer and venture capitalists Vinod Khosla and John Doerr, Nigerian cement titan Aliko Dangote, Indian industrialist Mukesh Ambani and Chinese e-commerce mogul Jack Ma, the CEO of Alibaba.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Narendra Modi told the global climate summit that advanced nations, which have a larger carbon footprint, should take the lead in addressing the climate change issue. Democratic India, he said, "needs to grow". The 21st session of the Conference of Parties or COP21 in Paris aims to forge an elusive agreement to curb global warming by limiting the emission of greenhouse gases.
