Movie lovers woke up to some shocking news: comic actor Robin Williams had committed suicide. He was found dead at his home in Tiburon, California.
The apparent cause of death was suicide by asphyxiation, although an investigation is continuing. “He had been battling severe depression of late,” Mara Buxbaum, his rep said in a statement to the press. “This is a tragic and sudden loss.”
The 63-year-old has starred in movies such as Mork And Mindy, Aladdin, Patch Adams, Jumanji and the iconic Mrs Doubtfire. He won an Academy Award in 1997 for Good Will Hunting, and had received nominations for The Fisher King, Dead Poets Society and Good Morning, Vietnam.
His electric and impish wit led him to become one of the biggest and highest-paid stars in Hollywood.
The US President, Barack Obama, in a statement said, “Robin Williams was an airman, a doctor, a genie, a nanny, a president, a professor, a bangarang Peter Pan, and everything in between. But he was one of a kind. He arrived in our lives as an alien but he ended up touching every element of the human spirit.”
His co-star in Mrs Doubtfire, Sally Field said, "I feel stunned and so sad about Robin. I'm sad for the world of comedy..." Added, Director Chris Columbus (Mrs Doubtfire, Nine Months, Bicentennial Man): "To watch Robin work was a magical and special privilege. His performances were unlike anything any of us had ever seen, they came from some spiritual and otherworldly place.”
