As we head into February, I wonder how many of our New Year resolutions still hold? I suspect a few have been discarded already and a few more may be set aside quietly over the next month or so.
It is only as a counsellor that I have understood that achieving goals or sticking to resolutions is like everything else in life – it works better when you have a system! In this case the system is a Plan for Change.
Specific, Measurable Goals
The first step of the plan is to set resolutions that can be measured systematically, so that you can check on a regular basis whether you are on track. So, instead of simply resolving to “lose those extra pounds I put on over the holidays” create a specific, time-bound goal that can be monitored. In this case, it could be: I will lose 5 pounds by April 30.
