If you are looking for an oxymoron, then fennel is a good example for it is a sweet spice that can be used in both savouries and desserts. But what makes it special is that this spice is filled with goodness.

Fennel enjoys a rich history and the ancient Greeks knew it by the name of marathon as it grew in the field where battles were fought. Fennel was also awarded to Pheidippides, the runner who delivered the news of the Persian invasion to Sparta. This spice was revered by the Greeks and the Romans for its healing properties.

The spice which is native to the Mediterranean region of Europe is now availble in many parts of the world. Here are some of its health benefits.

Prevents Anaemia: Iron and histidine, an amino acid found in fennel is useful for anaemia.

Treats Indigestion: Some of the essential oils found in these seeds stimulate the secretion of digestive juices facilitating absorption. It also helps to prevent constipation and eliminates bad breath.

Removes Flatulence: The seeds help in expelling gas from the stomach offering relief to infants and young children.

Treats Diarrhea: Fennel is helpful in treating diarrhoea if it is caused by bacterial infections because some components of the essential oil in fennel such as anetol and cineole have disinfectant and antibacterial properties. 

Reduces Heart Diseases: Fennel is a good source of fibre and helps in maintaining healthy levels of cholesterol. It helps prevent heart diseases as well as strokes.

Prevents Cancer: Research has revealed that fennel seed extract can be used to cure cancer. The extract contains concentrations of flavoids, alkaloids and phenols that combat the harmful effects of radiation during cancer treatment. The extract has been found especially useful for treating breast and liver cancer strains. 

Regulates Blood Pressure: Fennel is also a rich source of potassium which helps relax the tension of blood vessels thereby bringing down blood pressure.

Managing Diabetes: While fennel seeds have therapeutic qualities, the bulb is also effective in controlling insulin levels and thus diabetes.

Improves Brain Function: Potassium, found in high levels in fennel bulbs and seeds, is an electrolyte, which means that it facilitates increased electrical conduction throughout the body. Potassium can help increase brain function and cognitive abilities through this quality. 

Boosts Immunity: Fennel bulbs are a good source of Vitamin C which improves general immune system health, produces and repairs skin tissue, helps to form collagen, and also protects the blood vessel walls as an antioxidant against the harmful effects of free radicals that can frequently lead to heart disease!

Regulates Menstruation: Fennel is also an emmenagogue, meaning that it eases and regulates menstruation by properly regulating hormonal action in the body. Furthermore, fennel is used in a number of products to reduce the effects of PMS, and it is also used traditionally as a soothing pain reliever and relaxing agent for menopausal women.

Eye Care: Using fennel in food helps protect the eyes from inflammation, as well as helping to reduce disorders related to premature aging and macular degeneration. This is due to the abundance of antioxidants, detoxifiers and stimulants.

Apple Fennel SaladFennel -apple -and -walnut -salad -with -dill -mayonnaise -89199-1


  • 1 crisp tart variety apple
  • 1 bulb fennel
  • 30 gm walnuts
  • 2 tbsp olive oil 
  • 2 tbsp apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tsp honey
  • A pinch of salt


  1. Thinly slice the apples and fennel bulb.
  2. Rough chop the nuts
  3. Combine the above in a bowl and dress with olive oil, vinegar, honey and salt.
