“Mummy, I’m hungry. What can I have to eat?” is a constant question most mothers have to deal with. A balanced diet comprising carbohydrates, proteins and fats is essential for a child’s growth and development.
So start early by inculcating right practices, for what is learnt during childhood is not easily forgotten. Apart from portion control, it is important to get them into the habit of consuming whole grains, lean meats and healthy snacks such as fruits and vegetables.
Children should also be encouraged to eat a wide variety of food. Encourage them to eat slowly, chewing well. Ensure that you enjoy family meals and avoid distractions such as television or computers. Also involve your little ones in planning and shopping for ingredients. Make sure that the food they eat outside the home is also balanced. Apart from this, ensure that they drink lots of water and do not use food as a punishment or reward.
Finally, as parents, become role models to them and do not get disappointed if they don't meet your expectations.
But what is childhood without some indulgence? Here are some recipes that are delicious as well as nutritious.
Homemade Chicken Nuggets
1. In a plastic bag, mix the flour, salt and pepper. In a bowl, mix the eggs with 2 tbsps water. In a separate bowl, add the breadcrumbs.
2. Shake the chicken pieces in the bag to coat. In batches, dip them in the egg wash, then in the breadcrumbs.
3. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Fry the chicken, in batches until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel and serve with ketchup.
