Within the fences of Fort Canning is a quaint eatery by the name of The Fabulous Baker Boy (TFBB) Café. The name intrigued me as it bore a striking resemblance to one of my favourite food shows The Fabulous Baker Brothers featuring two good-looking British chefs who make baking seem like cake walk. “Would the treats here match up to the name?” I wondered as my dining companion and I entered the place.
TFBB has already become a popular place for brunching for here parents enjoy their meal inside, while children can safely ride a bike or a scooter outside, occasionally popping in for a bite. We had come to try out its new dinner menu, which is called FabDinner. Even on a weekday, the 90-seater restaurant was fairly full.
Though the overall look of the place is simple, you will at once notice artistic touches. Its co-owner, cook and chief baker, Juwanda Hassim has temporarily hung his acting and singing chops and is happily tied up in his apron strings. The adjoining gallery space – That Spare Room – had a stunning photography exhibition featuring sea gypsies. “We love to encourage artists,” he said.
Hassim has been cooking since the age of seven – his parents were caterers – and honed his baking skills during his stay in Europe and Thailand. Today with sister Hanita and chef Alvin Tan, the trio cooks up hearty dishes.
