Following sold-out seasons in London, Paris and Melbourne, the internationally acclaimed St Petersburg Ballet returns by popular demand to Singapore to present the world’s most famous ballet – Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. Playing for a limited season from May 8 to May 13 at The Theatre@MediaCorp. Tickets are now on sale. Led by prima ballerina Irina Kolesnikova, the St Petersburg Ballet includes a company of 60 and features guest stars from the Bolshoi Ballet. Hailed as “a triumph” by The Times of London, it is known to thrill audiences with breathtaking scenery and magnificent costumes.
The most loved and mesmerising of classical ballets, Swan Lake was Tchaikovsky's first. Composed in 1875, Swan Lake debuted in 1877 at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, but it was not well-received at the time. In 1895, Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov reworked the choreography for their St Petersburg performance and this has remained the most popular version.
A timeless love story that mixes magic, tragedy, and romance, Swan Lake features Prince Siegfried and Odette who, under the spell of an evil sorcerer, spends her days as a swan swimming on a lake of tears and her nights in her beautiful human form. Swan Lake, with its “sublime music and deeply moving story is the ballet that towers above all the others”, according to the Sunday Times of London.
