In its bid to become an IT-based economy, Sikkim, the pristine, organic Himalayan state in Northeast India recently held a landmark startup conference called the Kanchan Panda Startup Festival – the first of its kind in the Northeast.
That the event, held in late November, was a resounding success is evident from the fact that just days after the festival, the Sikkim government and the Software Technology Parks Of India (STPI) swung into action to set up an Incubation Centre for creating startups under the Northeast BPO scheme for the country’s Digital India Programme.
The festival drew its inspiration from the Chief Minister Mr Pawan Chamlimg’s Youth Empowerment & Self-Reliance Mission whose key mantra is to “transform from consumers to producers; and from job seekers to job creators” as stated by Mr Chamling himself at an impassioned and inspiring speech he made during the inauguration. The Chief Minister’s Startup Scheme (CMSUS) also figured prominently at the event.
“Sikkim is a precise state with well-educated people. It has gained national fame by becoming the first organic state of the world. There is a huge scope for entrepreneurs in Sikkim because there is active government participation,’’ said Mr Omkar Rai Director-General of STPI who was one of the chief keynote speakers. Chief Minister Chamling, an acknowledged visionary, has already given his in-principle approval for the centre and land has been allotted for it.
“The fest had the participation of acclaimed resource persons from all over the world which was encouraging,” added the STPI Director-General.
The festival brought together aspiring and established entrepreneurs from Sikkim and provided them a platform to interact with industrialists, thought leaders, venture capitalists and academics to exchange views, opinions and insights about investment, innovation and the creation of lucrative business ventures
