Dealing With Emotions

It is important to identify moodiness in children and tackle it effectively

I remember one of my friends telling me “I am very moody, so I dress for whatever mood I am in”. I have never met anyone who is not moody. Have you? Life is full of happy and sad moments……mood swingers. Don’t all of us sulk, brood, pout and sometimes without even being aware of it? Does this happen naturally with negative feelings or thoughts? Moodiness is a negative emotion which makes you feel cranky and out of sorts.

You ask your son “How was your exam?” He says “fine” in a not so pleasant tone. He snaps at the next question you ask. The first answer itself tells us that we should not push any further questions. Instead reframe the words “Shall we talk about this later when you feel like it?”

This sulkiness/moodiness/crankiness could be because of

  • Lack of sleep/oversleep
  • Tiredness
  • Low self-esteem
  • Poor appetite/over-eating
  • Problem with friends/parents/teachers
  • Single parent
  • Adolescent development
  • Teenagers – due to hormonal changes find it difficult to handle emotions and are confused more often.  The child in this age is like the weather, wet and windy.
