Born a Sikh, Navtej Johar found his true calling in Bharatnatyam and yoga

Khushwant Singh called him ‘the Dancing Sardar’, but the artistic world recognises Navtej Johar as a Bharatnatyam exponent and choreographer whose works traverse between the traditional and the avant-garde. A practicioner of yoga, he started the Abhyas Trust: a non-profit organisation dedicated to yoga, dance, urban design and the care of stray animals.
Johar will be performing Frenemies on July 4, 2015… at the O.P.E.N, part of SIFA 2015. Here are excerpts of an exclusive interview:
India Se: You are quite well-known in the art fraternity, but many will be intrigued by you and your Sikh background. How did you fall in love with Bharatanatyam? What was your family reaction to your choice?
