On March 28, 2014, Saluting Her Endeavour (SHE), the Malaysian chapter of SHE Worldwide, held a soft launch of their programmes in Kuala Lumpur. The event hosted several respected professionals such as Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan, Puan Seri Jeyashree Pandithan, Datuk Mariappan Santhanaban, Datuk Dr. Shimi, Dato Ang EE Xin, Madam Suzanne Tan, Dr Harrikrishnan and Dr Ooi.
In her welcome speech, Prof Aruna Gopinath, President of SHE, asserted that no Malaysian should feel deprived of a decent life by 2020. Malaysian women will be empowered in areas of malnutrition and poor health in rural areas, gender powerlessness, training and capacity building, sustainable development and community building, in the hope of establishing an enriched and valued Malaysian society that is supported by both men and women.
Datuk Rasammah Bhupalan, who selflessly advocates for human rights, equality and had fought for equal work and pay in Malaysia in the 1960’s, spoke about men’s domination over women. She further shared her belief that women’s status and respect will be heightened though empowerment and education. As women have always stood by their husband’s success as well as their children’s education, she proposed that these sacrifices should not be overlooked. Instead, they should be honoured. This further reflects SHE’s aim of saluting women of all races, religions, age and status as such sacrifices deserve the highest level of recognition.
