I am a 40-year-old woman working in an international company. I have wrinkles on my hands, which make them look rough and old. Please suggest ways to improve them?
The skin on the back of our hand is much thinner than that on our face. This makes the hands not only susceptible to the first signs of aging, but very often age even faster than the face. Hands also have less oil glands and are more exposed to water, detergents and face constant sun exposure which eventually lead to visible signs of aging. The damage appears as wrinkling, loss of elasticity, textural changes, hyperpigmentation, volume loss and prominent ‘ropy’ veins.
Most of the pigmentary and textural changes can be avoided or reversed by the use of deep moisturising agents that contain urea and lactic acid which should be combined with an SPF-rich sunscreen and used as often as possible. Products that contain retinoids and mild bleaching agents like kojic acid, lactic acid etc. should be rubbed into the back of the hands at bedtime. A simple salon treatment for hand and feet skin rejuvenation would be a paraffin wax treatment. This heated and melted wax improves the circulation and smoothens the skin texture.
Monthly microdermabrasion also helps. The more sophisticated treatments at the dermatologist would be peels, superficial and deep done once in a month, thermage or skin tightening, as the thin crepy texture is due to volume loss.
Finally, replacing the lost volume directly is the ‘icing on the cake’. There are fillers formulated like skin boosters to help plump up the skin on the back of hands. These hyaluronic acid molecules absorb the surrounding water and increase in volume over a period of time and the injected material may last over a year.
Nutritional supplements of antioxidants, flaxseed oil, co-enzyme and Vitamin C will go a long way in complementing the results achieved with this variety of non- invasive techniques that can be combined for best results.
