In the US, a book that is doing the rounds, should be of great interest to our intelligence agencies. “Call for Transnational Jihad-Lashker-e-Taiba 1985-2014” by Arif Jamal, a Pakistani journalist describes the unbreakable links between the LeT, the Pakistani Army/ISI and Dawood Ibrahim. Dawood, the notorious terrorist and underworld don, is the financier to both the ISI and LeT.
Not only does Jamal confirm what Christine Fair and Hussain Haqqani have written about in their books: Fighting to the End: The Pakistan Army’s Way of War and Magnificent Delusions but he gives details on how deep and far reaching the nexus between the three are. The fact that he claims that the LeT has half a million trained men ready and waiting in Pakistan to foment terror in many states of India, should be of special concern to us. Quite a few of them have been sent to India already. How many is anyone’s guess. Our borders are porous and trade continues.
Recently, it was reported, that Dawood was funding terror modules in West Bengal via Bangladesh. Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee seems determined to play this down in order to appease Wahabi clerics that are close to her. But, she is playing with fire as others have done for years in Jammu and Kashmir including the Separatists and the Abdullah family. Both have brought the Kashmir valley to a state of upheaval, along with the terror mechanism introduced by the ISI and LeT. The Centre knows this but seems to be in denial while our security forces pay with their lives.
Recently, a young army officer Lt Ummer Fayaz was murdered by terrorists in the valley. The army was unable to give him a state funeral because of stone pelters hired and paid by the Separatists who are in turn paid by the ISI. That we allow this to happen when we have the proof from intelligence input is shocking.
In an interview with Maroof Raza, Consulting Editor of Times Now and the author of the book ‘Wars and no peace over Kashmir’, I asked him about issues reported in the media currently concerning the Valley.
What was the truth behind a video circulating in the valley that showed two men being tortured by terrorists?
“This is part of Pakistan’s psychological operations to deter Kashmiris from integrating with mainstream India. The video was released by Pakistani jihadis on social media, a major tool used by Pakistan these days, and more could follow,” he replied.
As to why the Centre was allowing Saudi Arabian and Pakistani Wahabi channels to stream into the valley allowing more radicalisation to take place, he said, that it was known to intelligence agencies but religion is always a sensitive issue so it was overlooked - with the insistence of the J&K politicians - in the name of religious freedom. He added, “Bulk of the viewership is through cable networks at least in Srinagar, and Government of India should ban it and block all social media sites in J&K. It can do this and should as it will restrict Pakistani propaganda a lot.”
