Selling A Dream?

The Chief Minister who promised that New Delhi would be like Singapore seems to be failing

When a new party called Aam Adami Party (AAP) came into being in 2012 we all had high hopes for it in New Delhi. The leader, Kejriwal promised clean and efficient government.

I too believed that Arvind Kejriwal’s AAP would be able to curb corruption in 2012. My enthusiasm wore out quickly when I saw his shenanigans and how he always wanted media attention and did little else. Now he has become like an irritating fly that keeps buzzing around and is constantly drawn to dissent in any form, just as a fly is to food.

It has become quite clear that he can’t make Delhi even close to the standards followed in Singapore in five years, even in the areas that come directly under his control. All roads - 60 feet and wider - come under the PWD. Delhi has many such streets but of late they look filthy, along with the dividers and pavements that are broken and bushes that are overflowing with garbage. It seems no one is cleaning up. And Kejriwal and his ministers are only interested in having ridiculous press conferences on inane issues.

Slums are proliferating and the existing ones are expanding at a frightening rate.  Kejriwal knows he can get more votes from a slum than even a lower middle class family. Thus even if the slums are on railway land and the court orders their removal the AAP will not allow it.

The Pahari slum near Vasant Kunj is known to charge exorbitant rents to the very poor migrants coming in droves from UP and many slums are now under the control of land grabbers and touts who actually control the area. Some slum dwellers in the past have been given one- room flats but sell them to touts and come back to the vacated areas to be re-registered for new housing.
