The Chinese Dragon has always been viewed with some trepidation ever since the Korean War. I have read many books written by the Chinese. Biographies of Mao revealed that even when the North was losing the Korean War, Mao refused to give up. He said he had millions of Chinese who could be sent to the front. They were used as cannon fodder.
China has come a long way since the Mao era but it has, under the nose of the US, helped North Korea and Pakistan develop weapons of mass destruction. Without China’s support, North Korea would have ceased to exist as a rogue state. It seems China likes to keep monsters in its backyard just like Pakistan. Perhaps that is why China refuses to declare Masood Azhar a terrorist even though it knows he has been involved in terror strikes on India.
Perhaps in a crazy way China equates the Dalai Lama, a man of peace revered around the world, with Azhar, a man with the blood of many innocents on his hands. Even after decades, China cannot countenance the fact that India gave the Dalai Lama, this man of God, sanctuary.
Now China has allowed North Korea to threaten the US with an intercontinental ballistic missile – a weapon North Korea would have needed Chinese help to develop. But, as Trump has said, that cannot scare America. He is suspicious of the game China is playing, as he should be.
China would be stupid not to deter North Korea – and it would be equally short-sighted not to accept that Masood Azhar is a terrorist. After all, such people can make things very bad for the great economic corridor that China is building right through Pakistan. It would be far better to help put them away.
