Life is full of triumphs and trials, but the courageous soldier on. Just a few days before our interview, Kuppusamy Selvaraj or Selva as he is known, had won the Entrepreneur of the Year Award 2015, Singapore’s oldest entrepreneurial award, co-organised by the Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (ASME) and the Rotary Club of Singapore, but now he had to deal with a flood-damaged office in disaster-ravaged Madras.
The burly six-plus-footer, a born optimist, acknowledged there was some damage to his work premises in the capital of Tamil Nadu, but was confident that things would be under control and look up soon. His company had moved its back-end engineering process to India some years ago as it was cost-effective.
“We are a Singapore born company and follow the same practices and standards in Malayasia, Dubai and India. Moving some business to India was necessary to sustain it as the operating cost in Singapore was rising. It was difficult to attract and sustain good talent. Meanwhile, we have been able to create loyalty in India, and reward our employees by giving them the opportunity to work in Malaysia or Singapore,” said Selva. “We started our India operations in 2010, and now we are also able to concentrate on local business as a local company.”
